Around the island . . . Madrones

My madrone project continues, although I consider these three "sketches." The lighting was bad, no tripod, and who photographs at noon anyway?! I still like them, and they encourage me to be out there shooting "for real" the next overcast day we have (although not promising this week!).

The bark contrasting with the cambium (the part of the tree that the bark covers and protects) is just spectacular, and it's that contrast that I continually notice/look for.

These aren't bad for hand-held shots, and I like how the varying light created different colors on different trees.

Not bad for "sketches."

Around the island . . . Bayview Farm & Garden

Our good friends Rich and CJ recently spent a week with us here, and since we're all photographers, we did a bit of exploring.

The kind folks at Bayview Farm and Garden in Langley gave us permission to photograph their beautiful flowers/plants and we went sort of nutso with our iPhone cameras.

I was drawn to the more tropical plants, flowers, and displays, which is what you're seeing here. Striking colors, lovely light, and interesting subjects. Even something as common as a green leaf looked great.

Naturally we stopped in the gift shop, purchased a few things, had lemonade and cookies in their recently enlarged/expanded cafe, and then moved on around the island.

Good friends, lovely location, and terrific photography. Ahhhhh . . .

Around the island . . .

A solo deer on the bluff at Fort Ebey becomes the focal point in a landscape created by using my photos of the side of a fishing boat, cement patterns on a bunker, and a seascape... Insanity reigns! ©2019 Carol Leigh

Around the island . . . Greenbank Farm

It was a lovely day, so a little trip south to Greenbank for a stop at Greenbank Farm (and, of course, Whidbey Pies Cafe.

After a light lunch, we meandered around the grounds, admiring the pond, the Canada geese and their goslings, the gardens, the window boxes.

A lovely way to erase the cares of the day.

Same subject but different look . . .

Last month I uploaded these four pictures to Fine Art America / Pixels. I liked the painterly look I gave them, and the striking yet subtle colors.

But after a few days I removed the bottom two. Why? They're pretty, but they don't have the same feel, the same vibrancy, nor the same feeling of sharpness.

None of the images is sharp all the way through, however. I made sure the centers were in focus, but let the focus soften as your eye moves out from center.

The last two, however, don't have that same crispness in the center, and the "petals" don't have that same little glow. They're more "blah."

So after a couple of days, the top two pictures remain, but I removed the bottom two. And now I feel MUCH better!
