Daily Photo 20190116 Scraped Walls

Wednesday's "Daily Photo" is two photos, pictures I worked on a good part of Tuesday and then uploaded yesterday to Fine Art America.

They actually began a couple of years ago. I was riffling through my photo files, specifically the file called "works in progress," looking for inspiration.

I selected a piece I thought at the time was going nowhere. But this year it looked different and so I gave it a go.

This is what happened. Two different but similar pieces that don't necessarily go together on a wall, but individually look pretty good.

The green one is soft, serene, and calming. And I really love the background.

The red/turquoise picture is bold and flamboyant, exciting, not calming. And yes, the colors really grab me.

So there you have it. Two pictures as my January 16 "Daily Photo."

Around the yard

It was a cool, misty morning and so I wandered around the yard to see what I could find. I think we're going to have bright sunshine soon, and I always want to take advantage of morning magical overcast light.

This is my favorite tree in the yard. I don't know what it is. I don't think it will flower. But in the fall it turns a bright yellow. I have two handmade "things" hanging from it, which can only be seen in the winter. You stand underneath the tree, and you feel as if you're in a fort. Makes me feel like a kid. All those branches hanging down low and enclosing me.

Around the back are three flavors of hosta, which are flourishing. Deer and rabbits both like to nibble on them, but we've found something called "Deer Fence," which we spray on these and some other plants and (gasp!), the deer and bunnies keep their distance.

Thinking at first they were weeds, and almost yanking them out, turns out foxgloves have sprung up here and there around the yard. Lovely tall spires of flowers. The bumblebees love them, and it's fun to see them fly into an individual flower, and watch the flower vibrate with their activity.

And then finally a photo of the buoys we've attached to a post. We couldn't leave the Oregon coast without bringing a little bit of it with us.

Around the yard

Early this morning there was a soft mist falling. I was struck by how lusciously green everything looked, so took the cellphone out and wandered around the yard.

No breeze. No lawn mowers. Just the pileated woodpecker, who has been desperately drumming on trees in his quest to find a mate for the past EIGHT days.

It was all so beautifully lighted, so perfect, so peaceful, so tranquil.

This is what I love about the Pacific Northwest. I grumble about the wasps, the pollen, the tree debris, the amount of work required to keep things tidy (mainly because I kind of enjoy grumbling), but mornings like this make everything so worthwhile.

All together now ... ommmmmmmmmm.

ROYGBIV: GREEN!

And now we come to green, a particularly soothing color in nature. Because I'm less of a nature photographer than anything else, I find I have a plethora of green manmade things to choose for this category, such as the abstract design I found when wandering around fishing boats on the Oregon coast.

Next I feature a photo of birdhouses Chris made and that we had in front of our Oregon house. These eventually disintegrated and Chris made some more, similar in style. And this year we have tree swallows nesting in the middle house. Made us feel good to provide "affordable housing" for these birds.

And finally, a close-up of the side of a bus that June, Jill, and Gisela found for me when I visited North Carolina a few years ago. Do they know me well, or what?! This was such a cool junk yard to shoot in, although their "watch out for snakes" warning was a bit distracting . . .

It's now Sunday, although I'm writing this on Wednesday before the move. I am hoping that we have happily awakened in our familiar bed, that the cat isn't too freaked out, and that we can now begin opening boxes (which is actually a lot like Christmas -- we won't remember what's in each one!) and placing things where they seem to be most appropriate, knowing, of course, that in another three months everything will be all changed around again as we realize the couch looks awful over there, wouldn't it be better over here?

Green is an especially appropriate color for today because our house is completely surrounded by tall conifers, so much so that when the light is right, our white ceilings display a definite green tinge that's reflected from the trees.

ROYGBIV: GREEN!

It's interesting to see the variety of greens we have around us. The first two photos, both taken in Astoria, Oregon, have a yellowish cast to them. And then look at how blue the third photo is, the photo of the pine tree sprigs. The yellowish greens have a definitely lighter, airier feel to them; I personally am more drawn to the green colors with a bluish tinge.

Notice I didn't say anything about an apparently cranky cat on the railing. Reminds me too much of you-know-who here at home . . .

ROYGBIV: YELLOW!

Such a happy, bright color! Makes me smile just to see it. Here are three of my photos depicting the color yellow, and in each of them I used a pretty blue, which sets off the yellow quite well.

The yellow flower looks good combined with a bright blue background. The "Y" on a fishing boat looks good, too, combined with a scratched blue background. And then there's the photo of homes on a street in Tucson, Arizona, where I (in my extremely early years of Photoshop Elements) made the sky particularly blue. A very fakey blue to my eyes now. Come to think of it, the yellow's pretty fakey, too, isn't it? Oversaturated? Oh, yes, but ah, well.
