Rabbits, hawks, and deer . . .

When Abby goes on "alert," we pay attention. What do her cat ears hear that ours don't?

It was late afternoon a couple days ago when she suddenly sat up, listening, and so I went to the windows to see five (five!) Columbia black-tailed deer chasing each other around the yard, kicking up their heels, jumping (straight up), leaping, zooming out of sight and then zooming back.

And it's not like they were fawns -- maybe teenagers, young adults. And it went on for a couple of minutes. Just the most entertaining, fun, crazy thing to see.

Then yesterday afternoon, I saw a large-ish bird fly across the yard -- fast -- and disappear behind some rhododendron bushes. Simultaneous with his landing, a cottontail rabbit zoomed from the rhody bush and disappeared into deeper brush nearby. The hawk flew to a tree branch, shook out his feathers, and then flew off -- empty talon-ed.

Works for me.

Happy Easter. Happy spring. Happiness all 'round!

Appropriate for Easter . . .

We visited friends last week who raise Beveren rabbits. Oh, my! There were nine or ten of them, some babies, and they are constantly in motion. I got down low to photograph this beauty head-on.

Such a wonderful afternoon/evening, on many levels.

RABBIT! RABBIT! RABBIT!

It's June. Already. And so I offer you a trio of sixes to mark the arrival of the sixth month.

I've always loved photographing numbers, and now that I'm proficient in making photomontages, the joy increases exponentially. (Not that I know what "exponentially" means.)

Our friends have departed, alas, so today it's back to work. There are rhodies to be deadheaded, lawns to be mowed, laundry to be done. But bright yellow irises have shown up out front, so I anticipate a bit of photography will sneak its way in there sometime as well.

More guests arrive in a couple weeks, and how wonderful it is that we can greet and feed these people in such a lush and luscious environment.

Oh, and if it's not too late to remind you . . . On this, the first day of the month, it brings good luck to say "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit." It must be the first thing you say today, and you must say it aloud. So if you've not spoken to anyone yet, yell out "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" and see if your luck changes this month.

How could it hurt?

Nobody here but us wabbits!

Chris: "Carol, come quick! Look!"

Abby has jumped up onto what we call the "Holly Cabinet" and is sitting in front of a tall, carved, wooden folk art rabbit.

I grabbed the cellphone and took a couple of shots before she jumped down.

What's interesting is that when she was born, the people who had her called her "Bunny" because of the way she hopped around the house. A cat, apparently, never forgets her roots!

Bunny in Blue

This began with a photo I took of a rabbit that was painted on a vintage toy box. Available at Fine Art America (without the matting you see here). http://fineartamerica.com/featured/bunny-in-blue-carol-leigh.html

Bunny Van Gogh

What immediately strikes me about this image is how the paint strokes I applied look sort of Van Gogh-ish. I uploaded a similar version to my fine art website here: http://carol-leigh.artistwebsites.com/?tab=artwork
