Latest work: "Red Seven and Stripes"

A few weeks ago I made this photomontage called “Red Seven and Stripes.” Today I noticed how much it resembles a piece I made three years ago called “Five for the Books.” I like to think that I’ve been evolving in my artwork, but obviously I’m fooling myself!

Here’s how I described “Red Seven” when I uploaded it to Fine Art America:

I make a lot of hand-painted papers for collage work and love putting them together just to see what happens. In this case, I used a paper full of stripes, a paper with solid colors, another with textures, and topped it off with a big red 7. Throughout my photographic career I’ve always been drawn to letters and numbers, so this one was fun to make and to add to my “Numbers” gallery.

And here’s how I described “Five for the Books” when I uploaded it three years ago:

Lots of texture and a big red 5 show up here in this photomontage. I combined photos of my hand-painted papers, added some paint splotches, some stained papers, and much more. I like the warm red and blue color combination and how the elements on the left, if you don't look too closely, appear to be books.

It's a certain kind of person who enjoy images involving numbers and letters. Alas, that group is relatively small! So I'm always surprised when one of mine sells. Surprised and grateful that there are others out there of like mind!

A very long time ago, when I was just beginning in photography, I was showing some photos I'd taken to a photographer friend I respected. One of them was of some old wooden steps leading up to an old wooden doorway. To the right of the doorway was what remained of the address, a single "0" still clinging to the dark grey weathered wood. He paused. "What?" I said. "I'm just wondering why you took this." He obviously didn't like it, didn't understand it.

Luckily, I didn't take it to heart. (Except, obviously, I did, because notice how I've remembered the incident so clearly?) Numbers and letters have been a photographic passion for me lo these many years.

What's my point? Don't let someone throw shade on your artistic predilections. I hang around boat yards, dumps, back alleys, side streets, old fishing boats, fishnet storage facilities, bunker sites, etc. because those places feed my artistic soul. Others go to Yosemite, to wildflower-covered hills, to the coast at sunset for very good reasons -- sheer beauty. I prefer finding the beauty in decay, age, rust, peeling paint, weathered papers, and simple line and design.

Hey, it's a tough job. But somebody has to do it!

Latest work: "Depth Gauge Five"

Not too sure about this one, so I'm letting it "steep" awhile.

I photographed a rusty metal tank, a number "5" on a weathered depth gauge, and an extremely grungy painted wall to create this mashup of color and texture.

Sometimes these things come together so quickly, so smoothly and they look great. Other times it takes hours, and I'm still not sure. Which is the case here. We shall see. . .

Five "5" photos for five May

It's the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year, so (unlike the madness of posting one "3" photo a day throughout March), here are five "5" photos for this one day.

First is a "5" I found in downtown Los Angeles one year while conducting a photo walk. And then a big red "5" on the front door of a shop in Coupeville, Whidbey Island.

The third "5" is a close-up of a "5" on a bank note from Saudi Arabia. (Hey, art is where you find it, right?)

The fourth photo is a transmogrified "5," a photomontage that I created, flattened, and then used a painterly/sketch program (can't remember which one) to alter it yet again.

And the fifth and final photo is a trio of "5s" I found in Little Italy, San Diego.

Five. Such a visually cool number -- great curves along with a few straight lines -- and such a visually cool month, too, with all the blooming and color happening throughout.

Wishing you, all FIVE of my readers (!), a visually cool month as well.

Latest work: "Five for the Books"

When I first began making photomontages, I made a LOT that revolved around letters or numbers. And I see that that predilection continues today . . .

I particularly like the number five, for no apparent reason. Maybe it's because it's my birth month, or because it's an interesting shape, or because it's a yin/yang thing with straight lines and curves, or maybe I'm just weird . . .

So here we have yet another number, this time mixed with hand-painted papers, stained papers, paint splotches, my own marks, and textures.

Five. Number 2,479 in a (continuing) series . . . ©Carol Leigh

Number 5 Flotation Device

A lot of my work is done using muted colors of sepia, brown, black, grey, etc. During this rainy Oregon winter, I decided to shake things up a bit and put some color into my life. So here is this big number 5, seemingly floating in a sea of yellow and red and orange.

Created on a (yes) Mac . . .

Lucky number?

Do you have a lucky number? A number that seems to come up for you more often than not? Mine's five. Maybe because I was born in May? Don't know. Here I've combined a photo I took of a metal tag with a photo I took of the interior of a sea shell. I like the overall luminous quality. Five. Lucky? If so, the sliding glass door will indeed be installed today. Unfortunately, there's no deck outside it yet, so that first step outside will be an unlucky one. ©Carol Leigh, wishing you luck today, no matter what number comes up...

Numbering the days ...

"Numbering the days" sounds much better than "my days are numbered!" Number 19 is a combination of a physical collage and other photos I've taken. The second one consists of a photo of a New Mexico building, corrugated cardboard, adding machine tape, and a bunch of other stuff. And the 4 is again a mixture of a physical collage I'm working on combined with photos of old cellophane tape, an old envelope, and wrinkled paper. Thanks for stopping by. Slow No Wake

I like the colorful look of this piece, with the bold 5, the arc of part of a sign, peeling paint, etc. ©Carol Leigh

Five Star

Here I combined a star and a colorful wall found in South Beach, Oregon with a number 5 from a train car in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a board covered with fish scales in Newport, Oregon. Triangles from a stairway in Santa Fe, paint, rivets, and overall grunge add to the texture. Not yet available for sale. ©Carol Leigh Add Video
