 I've certainly got a circle motif going, don't I? Not only do I find them appealing, but in this case the colors are just wonderful. Ahhhhh . . .

Recent work: "Fenced In"

When I first began putting this picture together, I liked the blue/ochre complementary color combination, the cold/warm contrast. To hold those elements together, I opted for the rich darker blue stripe along with a touch of salmon and yellow. The abstract round form of a watch face then holds everything together and marks time.

Around the world we are watching the seasons change, the days change, the colors change — as though through a porthole on a ship. And off in the distance a rising colorful “sun” awaits. None too soon.

Recent Work: "Time Out"

When I go back and see the art I've made, there are some pieces in particular that I'm especially fond of, and this is one.

I made it in March of this year, as the pandemic was gaining traction. We didn't know what to expect, we were isolating ourselves, and time stood still, became meaningless.

So this mixed-media picture began with a big circle, a circle which is a photograph of a watch face. With no hands. There are some watch face bezels, hand-painted papers, and metal tags in the mix as well.

The colors are both bold and strong, bright and subtle. The vertical elements within the frame contrast wonderfully with the big circle. 

I made a square version as well as a full-frame vertical, and it looks good both ways. Because I sell my work online at Fine Art America/Pixels, this gives my buyers flexibility -- flexibility in format and in price. Sometimes a square works better in a certain location than does a vertical picture.

Recent work: "Blue Enso on Plaster"

This is one I finished the beginning of May and uploaded to Fine Art America.

A light blue Enso circle seemingly floats above a horizon line of warm red, yellow, and orange colors. I like the comforting colors, the complementary blue/orange combination, and the overall texture.

Recent work . . . "Collage Heart #653"

A friend of mine is going through some tough times, so I made her a collage, using just three pieces of paper: the heart (a gelatin print), a scrap of torn silver-painted paper, and a background of paper I'd used to clean my paintbrushes.

It was fun to make and she seemed to like it. The mercenary side of me, however, brought it into the computer before I mailed it to her, so that it now appears for sale on Fine Art America/Pixels.

Recent work: "Deception Pass Montage"

I create a lot of my montages by combining a number of photos (often totally unrelated) together. In this case, the photos I selected were all taken in the same place — Anacortes, Washington. I also added some pictures of rigging, and some hand-painted papers, then uploaded it to Fine Art America.

Latest work . . . "Torn Squares Collage"

I created a gel print, decided I didn’t like it, and began tearing it up. Hmmmm . . . I became more deliberate in my rips and tears, creating a number of squares. Okay, now what? And this eventually happened. You just never know, do you? Uploaded to Fine Art America first thing this morning.

Latest work: "Dappled Crow in Blue"

When you're sitting in the car, holding a camera, and a crow's on a fence right in front of you, well, what would YOU have done?! This guy was quite handsome and made a fine silhouette.

There are a number of photos contained in this one picture. All were taken in Port Townsend, Washington and then I added strips of dusty pink, orange, and turquoise to echo the colors in the background peeling paint. So much fun to do, so difficult to describe . . .

These pictures have finally been uploaded to Fine Art America -- it took me all month to create them. I'm hoping it was worth the wait!

As I was playing with different colors and shapes, I began thinking of a stage set, looking behind the scenes as well as from the audience’s point of view.

"Rehearsal"
The top picture is titled "Rehearsal." This one implies the “organized confusion” of what goes on both behind the scenes and from an empty theater’s point of view.

No audience, just the actors and crew finding their places, making adjustments, moving sets, fine-tuning the production. And are those guitar strings there at the bottom?

"Opening Night"
"Opening Night" appears in a square version as well as a wider horizontal. And I know this may sound weird, but don’t the round things at the bottom seem like a very attentive audience, waiting for the play to begin? No? Just me, I guess!

Latest work: "Dockside"

As usual, I've been experimenting with various photos and techniques, attempting to create something new, different, and interesting.

This composition came from various marinas in Anacortes, Washington, where I found textures as well as subject matter to photograph and then bring together in the computer.

It went through at least six different versions before I considered it "done" and I uploaded it to Fine Art America this morning.

Recent work: "Canyon Walls"

This picture began as a vertical image and I started with stripes, working from right to left. It was when I placed the far left stripe that I saw a landscape of sorts.

From there it was a no-brainer. Rotate the picture 90 degrees counter-clockwise so that what was originally the far left stripe now becomes my base.

I like the overall warm colors and how the complementary bluish elements at the bottom are just the opposite -- cool colors.

Gotta say, the process often feels simply magical, how everything goes together.

I also cropped the picture down to a square format, to give my buyers on Fine Art America a choice of sorts.

There's an autumnal feel to it, isn't there? Well, the weather around here feels pretty autumnal right now. Happy fall everybody!

Recent work: "Books Deconstructed"

Books that have been discarded by libraries or are too old and tattered to sell, become my fodder for making collages, both physical and via the computer. Old books, once valued and loved, now considered trash, come alive again in a new form. Salvaged and reconstructed.

Recent work: "Encircled in Sunlight"

Something a bit different for me -- using watercolor to make a figure of sorts there in the lower right. The rest is created using my usual things, such as part of a hand-painted enso circle, a scrap of paper that had fallen to the floor in a thrift store, scratched metal, etc. I particularly like the colors!

Latest work: "Four Circles" collage

India ink on brown paper forms the base of this collage, to which I added another sheet of rice paper that I stained with brown walnut ink and then scribbled on using more India ink. Down in the lower right corner are papers from antique Japanese books and an oval Japanese signature stamp. The four round circles were cut from an overall design on some special paper I purchased in Kyoto, Japan.

Latest work: "Panama Postal Collage"

Hand-painted gelatin print on Fabriano paper, crafted in Italy by the Fabriano mill. The postage stamp (issued in 1965) depicts a Panamanian azulejo, or blue-grey tanager (Thraupis episcopis). The vintage dark green postage stamp from Panama was issued sometime between 1904 and 1924. I found the “Par Avion” sticker in a junk store in Washington State’s Skagit Valley.

I found this grungy old sign tacked to a stick in a Pacific Northwest boat yard. I got the feeling this guy would rather be out on the ocean than repairing boats on dry land!

Latest work: R/V Atlantis

The Research Vessel "Atlantis" docked in Astoria, Oregon. This U.S. Navy ship is operated by famed Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and travels worldwide. I feel lucky to have seen it during its brief visit in Northwest Oregon.

Latest work: "One Particular Harbor"

This is what I've been working on the past few days and which finally came together this morning. Comprised of reflections of masts at the harbor in Port Townsend, Washington, bits of metal, pilings at low tide in Oregon, a piece of hand-painted paper, a funnel, and more. Often when I think I'm totally at a loss, I just keep working and SOMEthing eventually happens. For which I'm grateful.
